The PGCert in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education (PGCert LTHE) is an award designed for those who are directly responsible for teaching and learning in higher education (HE).

Our PGCert aligns to the Advance HE UK Professional Standards for Teaching and Supporting Learning in HE (UKPSF).
Each module consists of nine taught sessions supported by activities, readings and observations, allowing you to understand, apply and reinforce your learning of the concepts covered.
You must take 60 credits from the following modules:
Theory and Practice in Higher Education introduces you to the theories of learning and teaching, and pedagogic research. This supports you in the development of your practice through consideration of your own epistemologies and how these affect your students. Through a structured learning journey, and with the support of course tutors, workplace 'critical friend' and your peers, you'll have the opportunity to integrate a range of pedagogic concepts to your existing practice.
Practice and Research in Higher Education allows participants to build on their development in the first module. You'll consider a particular aspect of your practice that would be suitable for a potential research enquiry, paying particular attention to ethical issues that might arise. You will further develop and embed research-based teaching and guidance strategies to enable individual learners to make good progress. The module will help you to set your teaching within the context of your department, the institution and the wider context in which higher education operates.
The course employs a wide range of teaching and learning strategies, You're encouraged to share practice and to learn from one another across disciplines. This, in addition to a growing understanding of the evidence base that underpins good learning and teaching practices, will support you to engage critically in the development of your teaching with the key aim of enhancing the quality of your students' learning experience.
The assessments reflect the coherent design of the course, enabling you to develop academic and professional knowledge and understanding, combined with a critically reflective and enquiring mindset.
Successful completion of the assessment for the first module, Theory and Practice in Higher Education, ensures that you've reflected critically on your own practice in an HE context. Assessment will include reference to appropriate pedagogical theories and research, and to the diversity within your context.
Successful completion of the assessment for the second module, Practice and Research in Higher Education, ensures that you've undertaken further development. This builds on the critical reflection on your own practice in an HE context initiated in the first module. Assessment will include evidencing engagement in appropriate pedagogic research, academic and professional practices, and further engagement with your 'critical friend' and peers.

The University's Standard Entry Requirements apply. Usually participants have a UK first degree or its equivalent.
You're also required to have an active role in teaching and/or supporting student learning in higher education. You must be actively engaged in teaching and supporting learning during the course.
This programme doesn't accept Accredited Learning.
